During quarantine we remotely welcomed my cousin’s daughter into our family. Like many, we missed sharing the big moments with the parents-to-be. As their daughter turned 1. I wanted to create something special for her first birthday. I asked members of her family to help me make a book. We wrote various good wishes, stories, and poems. I illustrated her, along with a symbolic giraffe, to help tell their stories.

Oh Moriah you are very dear
Born during a pandemic year
A gift of new hope in one envelope
A good reason for us to cheer
You were born to a special tribe.
Filled with love and a creative vibe,
The humbleness approach Is our guiding coach
A perspective we all subscribe.
Our women are smart, strong, and brave.
We aim to take less than we gave.
Aim to be selfless and help the helpless
The best path you could ever pave
Stay present in the moment now
Please keep true all the words you vow
Always try to learn
From the dreams, you yearn
Never the endpoint; it’s about how
May you know only honest work
And possess more than just one quirk
May you empathize
Have many allies
Manage stress, so it doesn’t lurk
At times you will have tears in your eyes
This doesn’t change when you become full-size
The hardships will hit
Check-in with your wit
Stay true to God is the best I can advise
We do our best to keep heads high
Knowing when its wrong to comply
When we should stand tall
or to our knees fall
Our walk, not talk, will amplify
